Ten feet of snow has fallen over the last few days, but the highest permanent cybercafé in the world, located at Sherathang Trade Mart in Sikkim, 50 km from Gangtok, is still open for business.
The Community Information Center (CIC) cum cybercafé, at an elevation of 13,600 feet, is featured in the Limca Book of World Records. It is a vital lifeline for residents of this remote area — from armymen to students and border personnel. “Even in winter, we still keep the café open as it becomes an important communication centre for army, border personnel and staff of the mart’s administrative block,” said Rinzing Wongyal Sherpa, who runs the café, talking to HT from Yakla, a km from Sherathang. “This is also the place to hang out for students who come back home for the winter vacation,” he added. The cybercafé has been funded by the Centre and 'never closes'. "It also doubles up as a photo studio and offers printing, scanning and faxing facilities," said 28-year-old Sherpa. What is most surprising about the cybercafé is its nominal charges — Rs 20 per hour for surfing. Other than this, the café also conducts free training courses.
